Daenys Targaryen

Fire & Blood

Daenys Targaryen, known thereafter as Daenys the Dreamer, was the Targaryen maiden whose vision of Valyria’s destruction saved her family from the Doom. Her foresight transformed the family’s retreat to Dragonstone, regarded by rivals as cowardice, into the act that allowed the Targaryens to outlive the other dragonlords.

Identity and Background

Daenys was the maiden daughter of Aenar Targaryen, one of the Valyrian dragonlords. At Valyria’s height, rival houses struggled for power within a civilization whose influence reached across the known world. The Targaryens were not among its most powerful families, and their decision to leave the Freehold for Dragonstone could readily be mistaken for surrender.

The Vision and the Doom

Daenys foresaw that fire would destroy Valyria. Twelve years before the Doom, Aenar sold the family’s holdings and moved to Dragonstone with his wives, children, kin, wealth, slaves, and dragons. When the catastrophe came, the Targaryens were the only dragonlords to survive. The family’s relocation was therefore more than a change of home: it carried the line, and its dragons, beyond the reach of the destruction Daenys had foreseen.

Legacy

Daenys’s importance reaches beyond the immediate survival of her family. Dragonstone had served as Valyria’s westernmost outpost, but after the Doom it became the refuge from which the Targaryens endured the Century of Blood. Much later, Balerion was remembered as the only living creature who might have known Valyria before its fall: he had been the youngest of the five dragons brought to Dragonstone with Aenar and Daenys. Through that surviving dragon, the vanished homeland remained connected to the family whose future her vision had secured.
